Ask yourself these simple questions. How often do I use this item? If regularly used doesn't come top of mind, then toss the item into the garbage or put aside to give to charity. Also, for multiples of the same thing, ask yourself how many do I use? Recently, I found I had multiple wooden spoons, four of them in fact; I really only use 2 of the 4 - why keep 4 when 2 are used? So I put them in a give away pile for charity, in my case Value Village.
We looked and planned the movements around the kitchen, what we wanted to do with the space and how we wanted the kitchen to function. So, one week, we ordered a 40 yard dumpster to be delivered to the house. We knew about these as when we moved in, we had filled five of these babies with junk from inside the house as well as the yard. We checked with each other hoping that we were really sane, picked up sledge hammers and started on the walls. What fun it was, tearing away what had become a kitchen that we did not like and could not stand.
Besides being able to hold our clutter and enabling further disorganization, having messy kitchen drawers can waste time as we scour through them in search of the one thing that we need. By being disorganized, the drawers also hide duplicates and make getting rid of kitchen clutter more difficult; if we cannot lay everything out and see what all we have we are more prone to keeping everything in the drawers and trying not to worry about it - but we can fix this quickly and easily!
