Why do you wish to add a an island at the center of your kitchen in the first place? Is it for extra storage? Or to hold a cook top, or a kitchen table even? The purpose of having a kitchen island is a crucial factor as far as the design is concerned. Take for instance if you intend to put kitchen appliances in it, making the island as a storage won't be ideal. Or if the island is primarily intended for cooking, the countertop you should use much be able to withstand hot pans and pots.
Allow adequate countertop space on both sides (left and right) of the kitchen island if a sink or cooktop will be used. Include at least 15 inches of countertop space on each side, and if your kitchen is large enough, allow even more space. You can never have too much countertop space in a kitchen. Also, rounded countertop corners help protect everyone from bad bruises. This is true about all kitchen countertop corners.
Placing an appliance on the island may not seem like you are decorating but this serves as both a functional way and decorative way to store a great appliance that you may have. Don't just put any old appliance on the counter area. Instead use your nice fancy stainless steel toaster or blender for the décor. If you are going to decorate with an appliance be sure that the island has outlets or there is one accessible from where the island is located in the kitchen.
