We had decided to open up the kitchen - that it would only have two walls with an island that was filled with drawers - big drawers with heavy file cabinet drawer slides (The things that filing drawers use to pull in and out smoothly while supporting the heavy load of paper, files and books.) They can support over 100 pounds each and we thought they would work fine to support drawers that held large stand mixers, iron pots and pans as well as dishes. We built drawers that were tall enough to hold big bowls and other tall things that are used in the kitchen. We also made drawers that were deep enough to hold baking pans and all sorts of things for cooking. There were even spice drawers with angled racks in the drawer so the labels could be easily read.
Try using drawer organizers to contain what you want in each drawer. These always work well for your silverware but they are great for holding those pens and pencils too. Sort through your spoons, spatulas, tongs etc. and ask yourself if your using them and how often? You may find that you have duplicate items but you only use a select few that are your favorites. Categorize and group together different utensils that you need but don't use every day. Take for example a garlic press, can opener, egg slicer, specialty knives for cheese and vegetables etc. Knowing that you keep these items together will make them easier to find when they are needed.
There are some great drawer organizers for your kitchen organizing solutions. I personally like the 2 tiered kind with the top used for cutlery and when its pushed back you have a second layer below for other things. For cooking utensils you can either put these in an upright holder on your counter by your stove to help declutter and expand your drawer space or, if you have the drawer space keep them in a drawer.
