The use of shelves in base cabinets is poor ergonomics: It makes it very difficult to find items as it is impossible to gain an overview of the entire cabinet contents. It is quite common for a kitchen user to have to bend and stretch when searching for something. Equally they frequently have to remove the contents at the front in order to get to the items at the back.
You may have guessed that the kitchen was to revolve around the stove and all the details that are needed to cook on the marvelous one we choose. After much research, we choose a gas Viking 36 inch, six burner stove with one oven. Black and chrome, it was a thing of beauty and held the place of honor in the kitchen. We had a custom range hood designed with a 'double lung' exhaust system, so the kitchen never over heated while the stove was being used. We had a pot of stock on one of the back burners most of the time.
Try using drawer organizers to contain what you want in each drawer. These always work well for your silverware but they are great for holding those pens and pencils too. Sort through your spoons, spatulas, tongs etc. and ask yourself if your using them and how often? You may find that you have duplicate items but you only use a select few that are your favorites. Categorize and group together different utensils that you need but don't use every day. Take for example a garlic press, can opener, egg slicer, specialty knives for cheese and vegetables etc. Knowing that you keep these items together will make them easier to find when they are needed.
